Bio

Dr. Stephen Van Lew is currently an Assistant Professor/Capstone Coordinator the Occupational Therapy Program at RIT. He holds a BS in Occupational Therapy, MS in Movement Sciences and a PhD in Health Sciences. Previously, he was the Director of Occupational Therapy at NYU Langone in NYC for 23 years. He has been the principal investigator for a number of research projects along with primary and co-authoring numerous peer review publications. His clinical and research interests are in the area of adult neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation. He continues to volunteer as Roster Accreditation Evaluator Team Chair for the American Council of Occupational Therapy Education in the accreditation assessment process for occupational therapy education programs.

Disease Awareness and Prevention
3 Credits
This course explores the effects of wellness and disease prevention on the human lifecycle, lifestyles and overall health. Basic structure and function of selected human body systems are discussed and related to factors such as diet and nutrition, alcohol, drugs, tobacco use, stress and the environment in discussion of health promotion and disease prevention. Lecture and class discussion and student participation are used to explore health related issues.

Health Conditions and Occupational Therapy Performance
3 Credits
This course is designed to provide an overview of common health conditions encountered in occupational therapy practice across the lifespan with a focus on the impact of health conditions on occupational performance.

Applied Kinesiology and Movement Analysis
3 Credits
In this course students will be introduced to the fundamental biomechanical and kinesiological principles for assessing and intervening movement to maximize occupational performance and engagement in occupation. Students are expected to acquire and apply knowledge and skills in performing and interpreting assessments for clients with various health conditions and designing therapeutic interventions. This course includes a laboratory component.

Scholarly Foundations & Capstone Development
3 Credits
Building on the research inquiry in occupational therapy (WSHN 700) this course advances students’ scholarly competencies in preparation for their research project while introducing the foundations of capstone development. Students will be introduced to the Capstone process and student/faculty responsibilities and will engage in an examination of their interest areas(s) for the capstone experience and related project. Students will participate in various preparatory activities and learning experiences as they relate to the designated areas that are the capstone experience (beyond the generalist level) theory development, research, advanced clinical practice, leadership, advocacy, program development, policy development, education and administration.

Research Methods in Health and Well-being
3 Credits
Research Methods in Health and Well-being addresses requisite foundational skills to conduct rigorous, robust, and ethical research into problems related to health, nutrition and well-being. Evidence-based and translational research issues are presented in tandem with design of research studies, measurement approaches, funding opportunities, and research management considerations.
