- Early Opportunity Program in Medicine
RIT pre-health students have a direct path to medical school through a partnership with the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo (UB). The Early Opportunity Program in Medicine allows eligible RIT students to secure a pre-admission offer to the Jacobs School of Medicine while completing their undergraduate degree at RIT.
Students accepted into the program gain early access to professional training and mentorship at UB’s medical school, helping them prepare for the demands of medical school and beyond. This program is especially designed to support talented students who have experienced socioeconomic challenges or other barriers to education.
What are the Benefits?
The Early Opportunity Program in Medicine provides participants with valuable preparation and support, including:
- Waiver of the secondary application and associated fee
- Guidance for the medical school entrance exam (to prepare for the MCAT)
- Coaching on interview and letter-writing skills
- Peer mentoring from current medical school students
- A summer academic program at the Jacobs School between junior and senior year
“Admission to medical school is highly competitive, and RIT is excited to offer students an affiliation with UB,” said Todd Camenisch, director of RIT’s biomedical sciences program. “Many RIT students have life experiences and academic achievements that will make them outstanding and compassionate medical doctors. This program gives them an opportunity to get into medical school and positively impact the human condition.”
How to Apply
RIT second-year students are invited to apply to RIT’s nominating committee each fall. The committee will review applications and make recommendations submitted to UB by March 1. Students will be informed of their nomination status by RIT during the spring semester. UB’s medical school admissions office will then communicate admissions decisions directly to those students.
Applications are due by the end of the Fall semester.
Please note that this is a nomination-only program. Students must be selected by the RIT EOPIM-nominating committee to be considered.
