The global public health BS degree offers a specialized course–Global Healthcare Delivery with International Field Experience (GLPH-455)–in which students compare public health efforts and health care systems in the United States against the health care systems of the Dominican Republic. The course is offered during the spring semester, with a seven-day immersive educational and research experience trip to the Dominican Republic occurring during spring break week.

About the Global Healthcare Delivery Course

Students interested in this experience should register for the Global Healthcare Delivery with International Field Experience (GLPH-455) for the spring semester. The course explores various aspects of public health and health care systems in different cultures/countries around the world, with an emphasis on the core building blocks of effective health care systems as described by the World Health Organization (WHO). You will explore the role that culture, traditions, religious beliefs, and other social determinants of health have on disease and injury prevention strategies and access to health care services. Throughout the course, you will compare public health efforts and health care systems in the USA and one foreign country, the Dominican Republic, ultimately traveling to the Dominican Republic for an immersive educational and research experience during spring break.

A group of people pose together indoors wearing matching orange RIT shirts and holding ‘RIT TIGERS’ and Rochester Institute of Technology signs, with other people and a colorful mural in the background.

What You’ll Experience

The opportunity to experience and study global public health in a country much different than the United States provides you with an opportunity to learn how people in other nations access health care, how their health care systems compare to our own, and  the opportunities and challenges of these systems for their citizens. During your immersive experience you will:

Research Project
All students on the trip are working on a research project pertaining to some aspect of healthcare or public health in the Dominican Republic.

Educational Presentation
Students participate in a health care presentation to Haitian and Dominican children who live in the area we will be visiting.

Health Care Services Tours
The group will visit multiple hospitals, emergency response organizations, and schools, and we will interact with health care professionals who travel over to the Dominican Republic from Haiti in order to learn about the status of health care in between these two neighboring countries.

Tourist Excursions
The group will also visit historic sites in old Santo Domingo and Eagle Bay Beach near Pedernales, one of the nicest beaches in the world.

A collage of photos shows people participating in hands-on learning and community activities, including a group inside an ambulance, a classroom demonstration with teaching materials, and two people speaking in front of health-education posters. Another photo shows a small group posing outdoors in a leafy setting.
