Benchtop Torsion Testing Machine

Location

Engineering Hall (ENG/017)

Watch metal twist, deform, and suddenly fail! Our benchtop torsion testing machine demonstrates how engineers study material behavior by rotating solid metal samples until they break. Visitors can see real-time measurements of torque and angular displacement as the specimen slowly turns, revealing just how much “twist” metal can withstand before a dramatic pop signals failure. A simple line drawn on the sample transforms into a striking spiral, making the hidden mechanics of torsion visible. This interactive exhibit offers a rare, hands-on look at mechanical testing—and guests are welcome to keep a tested sample as a souvenir.
