Generative AI in Writing Image Descriptions

We investigate how people write image descriptions for complex scientific figures when they are not subject matter experts. We asked 12 professionals to create alt text on their own and then with help from generative AI tools. AI made the process faster, but it also raised concerns about accuracy and trust. We found that AI can help users in writing image descriptions, but better support tools are needed to ensure high-quality, reliable descriptions.
