Helios - The Robotic Companion

Location

Gordon Field House and Activities Center (GOR/024) - Main Floor

Meet Helios, a lovable robotic companion with a personality as charming as it is clever! Helios is a 3D-printed, Arduino-powered robot with a quirky flair and a whole bunch of tricks up his sleeve. Unlike robots that rely on controllers, Helios is completely autonomous. He's able avoid obstacles like walls, furniture, and even other visitors, all while sporting a charming wobbly walk. It's like he's a little puppy, still figuring things out about the world around him, making him feel more real and relatable. His sensors inside of him let him track your movements and navigate through the big world one wobbly step at a time. Helios also has a laser inside his head, scanning the walls and floor as he turns. The real magic comes from his thermal heat camera inside of his head, which allows him to recognize people by their body heat and start following them. No facial recognition needed. Want to see Helios' personality in action? Simply look into the monitor projecting his cute pixelated face. His animated expressions change based on your interactions. For example, you can tap gently on his head, and you'll see his over-the-top animations, or he might even spin around or start to dance as if saying, "Hey, I'm right here!". Helios' interactive nature makes each encounter feel like a chat with a tiny robotic friend, always ready to entertain. Visitors can see Helios' fun, animated personality while also learning about advanced technologies like thermal heat tracking, sensors, and 3D printing in robotics. Whether you're a tech enthusiast, a robotics beginner, or just someone who loves meeting a robot with attitude, Helios is sure to win you over!
