SHED Makerspace Temporary ID Dispenser
Location
Student Hall for Exploration and Development (SHD/011) - 011-A350 Open Makerspace
With RIT moving to phone-based IDs, more students will come to the Makerspace without a physical card needed for ACS. Therefore, we've been given the opportunity to design a prototype kiosk that will scan a student/faculty's phone, communicate with the server, assigning them a UID, and dispensing a temporary ID that will allow them to utilize the machines within the Makerspace. With a storage capacity of 200 cards, this machine will be able to process at least 1000 people per day all year round, and will also be able to retrieve and recirculate dispensed IDs for reuse. It's also designed for portability, allowing the SHED to setup and dismantle these systems quite easily, while also being tamper-proof and easy to maintain. After working with the SHED to write the API, we hope to grow the system to allow access for visiting faculty and non-RIT users in the future.
This dispenser will be able to scan, dispense and recirculate temporary RFID cards for use in the Makerspace even without a physical RIT ID.
