This course will define intersectionality and review the reality of the intersection of race, class, gender and sexual identity. Students will explore how systems of oppression reinforce each other and visually see how varying identities intersect to create an overall matrix of domination. Essential to this course is understanding that there is no construction of race separate from gender, no construction of class separate from race, no construction of sexual identity separate from gender and that identity is not static but contingent, contextual, and simultaneous effect of multiple identities.

The purpose of this course is to examine the psychological and social development of deaf and hard-of-hearing students in childhood and adolescence. The ways that family, school, and community affect the student's development, including effects on cognitive processes, identity formation, and peer relationships, are considered. Psychological and sociological perspectives on students' experience in general are used to provide a framework for understanding the development of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Educational implications of the theories and research presented are discussed.

    RIT/NTID announces personnel changes to support antiracism programs

    NTID has announced personnel changes in support of the college’s Antiracism and Social Justice Plan, which is scheduled for release this fall. Alesia Allen has been named assistant vice president for diversity and inclusion; Joseph Hill will serve as assistant dean for ALANA faculty recruitment and retention; Thomastine “Tommie” Sarchet-Maher is assistant dean of ALANA Outreach, Access, and Success; and Peter Hauser has been named assistant dean of research mentoring.
