Lean Six Sigma focuses on improving processes by combining Lean principles that reduce waste with Six Sigma methods that reduce variation and defects. You’ll explore lean manufacturing engineering and lean systems engineering approaches to improving processes, production systems, and organizational performance. In this option, you’ll build on the broad foundation of industrial engineering while gaining specialized knowledge in structured problem solving, process analysis, production systems, quality improvement, and experimental design.
From improving manufacturing flow and reducing defects to streamlining service operations, strengthening supply chains, and designing better experiments, Lean Six Sigma helps engineers apply Six Sigma methods in engineering design to create systems that are efficient, reliable, measurable, and continuously improving.
Courses in Lean Six Sigma in Industrial Engineering
The Lean Six Sigma option requires electives that strengthen your ability to improve processes, manage production systems, and use data to make better decisions. These course options include:
- Lean Six Sigma Fundamentals: introduces structured process improvement methods for reducing waste, variation, and defects. Students can earn Yellow and Green Belt credentials, demonstrating foundational and advanced process improvement skills.
- Lean Systems Design: examines modern approaches to designing, analyzing, and improving production and service environments.
- Production Systems Management: develops skills for managing complex operations and aligning decisions with organizational goals.
- Design of Experiments: applies statistical methods to plan experiments, evaluate process factors, and support evidence-based improvement.
