CNN Producer Discusses ‘Perspectives on the Haiti Earthquake’

Images from the aftermath of the earthquake that shook Haiti in January were relayed around the world. The impact of the images will be part of the discussion, “Perspectives on the Haiti Earthquake,” featuring Vlad Duthiers, a producer at CNN who was part of the news team reporting about rescue and relief efforts. His presentation takes place 2-3:30 p.m. April 9 in Carlson Auditorium at Rochester Institute of Technology. The program is free and open to the public.

Duthiers is a production assistant at CNN in New York assigned to the Emmy award winning news program AC360˚ anchored by Anderson Cooper. He also worked as a freelancer for CNN’s chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, on her international news program, Amanpour.

During the earthquake coverage, he acted as interpreter along with his usual production duties to produce the AC360˚ program over the course of 18 days. Duthiers will be bringing still photographs he took in Haiti as well as video packages produced for CNN’s AC360˚ episodes from Haiti. He will also be showing a couple of short video pieces about looting in Haiti that he took and produced for CNN.

Joining Duthiers for the program will be Michael Shields and Rose Marie Chierici, local representatives from Haiti Outreach Pwoje Espwa. Shields is chief executive officer, e-Logic, and chairman of the board of the organization; Chierici, chair of the anthropology department, SUNY Geneseo, is its executive director.

Haiti Outreach Pwoje Espwa is a local non-profit agency that serves the community of Borgne, Haiti, in the areas of health care, education and economic development. HOPE focuses on water sanitation and distribution in an area that has limited or no clean water resources nearby and has seen a marked increase in water-borne illnesses and disease among the population. Several of the HOPE representatives have traveled to Haiti in the recent weeks to support relief efforts.
