Project Runway Goes Green: Student Club Models Outfits Made of Recycled Materials

Student Environmental Action League

Members of the Student Environmental Action League will participate in the third annual Project Runway Goes Green, showcasing clothing made from products such as plastic bags, cookie wrappers and bicycle tires.

Recycled materials have multiple uses, including parts of a wardrobe.

Members of the Student Environmental Action League at Rochester Institute of Technology are sponsoring the third annual Project Runway Goes Green at 6 p.m. May 2 in Ingle Auditorium in the Student Alumni Union. The event is free and open to the public.

The Project Runway Goes Green event is a competition for teams to design and model an outfit made of post-consumer products, says Josh Goldowitz, faculty advisor to the student organization. Products used in previous competitions include plastic, department store bags, Oreo cookie wrappers, a potato sack, flattened bottle caps for decoration and, most memorably, bicycle tires, he says.

Participants will describe their designs and the products used. The judging will be based on the specific materials used and the overall appeal of the outfit.
