Overview
As an Honors Orientation Mentor you help to inform our newest students' impressions of the Honors Program and other Honors students. You'll set the scene and show new students what it's like to be in Honors and help to establish a foundation for success in the program. By sharing your first-hand experiences and knowledge of of the program you'll provide the incoming class with an understanding of the program's requirements, opportunities, events, and goals, and support them through their first weeks at and beyond at RIT.
What is required to be a Mentor?
Honors Orientation Mentors are selected based on past leadership experience, engagement with the program and the Honors community, connection to your college/major, and your overall drive to positively contribute to not only the orientation events and activities, but to the incoming students' experiences at RIT. We will hire up to 20 Mentors for this fall's orientation.
Lead Mentor applicants must have previously served as an Honors Orientation Mentor and exhibit strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Leads will work closely with the program staff to develop the orientation events and will facilitate much of the Mentor training day and are responsible for supporting the 20 selected Mentors. Highly qualified applicants will be interviewed for the one of three open Lead Mentor positions.
To become either a Mentor, or Lead Mentor, students must be in good standing in the program.
Both Mentors and Lead Mentors must be able to commit to the following dates and schedule:
Thurs. 8/20, 9am-4pm - Mentor Training Day
Fri. 8/21, 8am-3:30pm - On Campus Programming
Sat. 8/22, 8:30am-5:00pm - Camp Arrowhead Day
Sun. 8/23, 10am-12pm - Mentor Brunch and Debrief
Additionally, Lead Mentors will need to meet with office staff 1 or 2 times during the Spring Semester, as well as have 2-3 planned meetings held virtually over the summer.
How are Mentors Compensated?
All Orientation Mentors receive 15 hours of complementary learning that can be applied to either the previous or upcoming academic year. Additionally, all mentors are paid a stipend, which vary by role and experience as outlined below:
- New mentors = $175
- Returning mentors = $225
