Develop an Undeclared Program

Undeclared Programs offer students the flexibility and time to explore a variety of majors within the university while remaining on track for an on-time graduation. As an undeclared major, students complete undergraduate courses while actively pursuing career exploration or preparation for a degree program. Undeclared programs cannot exceed two semesters in length.

A NYSED application is not required for Undeclared Programs because students cannot graduate from them.

College Exploration Programs and Pre-Baccalaureate Programs are examples of Undeclared Programs.

To propose a new Undeclared Program, the following steps must be completed:

• Prepare a proposal which includes the following information:
  • Name of undeclared program
  • Description
  • Rationale for creation of the new undeclared program
  • RIT Curriculum Table which identifies the courses students will take
  • Anticipated start term (when new students will begin the program)
• Secure approval from the following:
  • Department Head
  • College Curriculum Committee
  • Enrollment Management

Submit the proposal and required approvals via email to the Office of the Vice Provost.

The Office of the Vice Provost will review the proposal and submit it to the Provost for review and approval. If the proposal is approved by the Provost, the Office of the Vice Provost will complete the following:

• Notify the college that the proposal has been approved.
• Request a Plan Code from the Registrar’s Office.
• Send an Official Campus Notification to the applicable campus departments.

Add the new exploration program to the RIT Programs of Study website and in the Undergraduate Catalog based on the anticipated start term.
