Bio

I am a theoretical and computational astrophysicist and an Assistant Professor in RIT’s School of Physics and Astronomy, where I joined the faculty through the Empire Faculty Fellows program. I earned bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and physics from Bucknell University and a Ph.D. in physics and astronomy from Dartmouth. Before joining RIT, I held research and faculty positions at the University of Wyoming, Konkoly Observatory in Hungary, NASA's Space Telescope Science Institute, the Australian National University, and the South African Astronomical Observatory. I have been a developer of the open-source stellar evolution code MESA and served as director for two international MESA Summer School programs: one in Budapest and one in Jackson, Wyoming.

My research combines precision stellar modeling, asteroseismology, and machine learning and artificial intelligence to understand how stars evolve and how they can be used to reconstruct the history of the Milky Way. I am particularly interested in how uncertain interior physics—especially convection and mixing—affects stellar lifetimes and age measurements. My group studies evolved and variable stars, develops new stellar models and computational inference tools, and applies them to problems ranging from the hidden companion of Betelgeuse to the formation history of the Galactic Bulge. My group is developing methods that use stellar oscillations to infer reliable ages for the enormous stellar populations that will be observed by TESS, Gaia, the Roman Space Telescope, and LSST. More information about my group and current projects is available at meridithjoyce.com.
