The RIT athletics program welcomes two new head coaches for the fall season, in addition to a handful of standout athletes looking to lead their teams to great success in 2010.
Liz Masterson comes to RIT after serving two seasons as the head women’s soccer coach at Elmira College. While at Elmira, Masterson helped the Soaring Eagles double their win total from 2008 to 2009. She has a talented group of returning veterans, including senior midfielders Shireen Irani and Monica Cook and sophomore Chelsea Shoemaker.
Jim Lodes returns to lead the RIT volleyball team after serving as the head coach from 1991 to 1995, compiling an impressive 170-59 mark. While at RIT he led the Tigers to the national Division III semifinals in 1993. RIT will be very young in 2010 but has several talented underclassmen, led by sophomores Rebecca Moore and Christina Worth.
RIT’s men’s soccer team has high hopes in 2010. The Tigers, who recently returned to the United States after traveling to Barcelona, Spain to train and compete with some of the top collegiate teams in the region, return three of their top four scorers from 2009. Seniors Dom Colaprete and Bret Dietz will look to lead the Tigers to their fourth Empire 8 title since 2000 and first NCAA berth in five years.
Women’s tennis looks to win its first Empire 8 Championship in 2010, and boasts one of the top players in the region, senior Amanda Berg. Berg, the 2008 Empire 8 Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, repeated as a first-team selection after posting a 7-1 regular season conference mark at first singles in 2009. She is 29-7 in two years at RIT.
Both the men’s and women’s cross country squads will look to continue their success from previous seasons. Last year, the men qualified for the NCAA Championships and won the Empire 8 title in convincing fashion. RIT returns All-Empire 8 performers Zach Miller and Mike Kurvach. On the women’s side, several top runners return, including 2009 All-Empire 8 selections Abby Aker and Anna Guthrie.
The defending Atlantic Hockey Association and NCAA East Regional champion RIT men’s hockey team will play 34 regular season games and one exhibition contest in the upcoming 2010-2011 season. This is the Tigers’ sixth season at the NCAA Division I level.
RIT, which made a historic run to the NCAA Frozen Four and set a team record with 28 wins last season, will play 14 regular season home games at Ritter Arena and one regular season game at the Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester.
