Looking back—and looking forward Inside N&E

The Commencement issue of News & Events is being delivered to campus today, and, like a marathon runner, I’m so proud of what’s been accomplished—and I’m so glad it’s over.

Our 12-page year-end issue contains all of the elements that we have come to know and love—profiles of our outstanding Eisenhart Award-winning professors, stories featuring students who do more in a day than some of us do in a week, a glimpse into what Commencement weekend is all about, and a page dedicated to student award winners.

And, to round it out, there are lots of other interesting bits. This year is no exception with a brief about a few guys from RIT University Publications who have turned their Imagine RIT exhibit into a sensation hitting the Web a hundred times over. Our Commencement issue also comes out hot on the heels of the highly successful Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival. Turn to page 10 of the issue to see a few snapshots from the second annual event that saw nearly 25,000 visitors flood the campus.

Personally, I just celebrated my 12th anniversary as an RIT employee, and I’m even more impressed by this place now than I ever have been. I’ve held the role of News & Events editor for about nine years now (geez, almost a decade!), and I’m amazed at how far the publication has come. Each summer we brainstorm ideas with our creative team about how we can continue to make News & Events fresh and interesting for our readers. Sometimes, it’s a subtle color change, page-layout adjustment or even a complete re-design of the issue. And, last year, we asked for your feedback on how we’re doing and what we can do better to serve the university community. Before we begin this annual process, I always enjoy looking back at issues produced in the ’80s and early ’90s. The times have changed, the students have changed, and so has News & Events.

So, now that the Commencement issue is “out the door,” so to speak, what’s next for News & Events? Stay tuned.
