FIRST impressions Events

The 2007 FIRST season has officially kicked off. For the next six weeks hundreds of high school students throughout the Finger Lakes and Upstate New York regions will be working on their robots. No, not the dance move—actual robots.

The FIRST High School Robotics Program challenges teams of high school students to design and build a robot that will compete in a game against other high school teams. The regional competition will be held March 8-10 at RIT’s Gordon Field House and Activities Center. This year’s game, Rack ‘n Roll, requires the team’s robot to be able to pick up colored rings and place them on the arms of a circular rack, located at the center of the arena. Teams will receive points based on where their rings are hung on the rack.

FIRST was established in 1989 by Dean Kamen, who holds over 150 U.S. patents and is best known as the inventor of the portable insulin pump and the Segway Human Transporter. Kamen was also the keynote speaker at RIT’s 2006 Academic Convocation. FIRST will host 37 competitions during the 2007, with the championship event to be held at the Georgia Dome.

Stay tuned for more updates as the FIRST competition draws closer, or follow each teams progress by viewing the team photographs posted on the Democrat & Chronicle homepage in the ‘Your Photos’ section.
