RIT’s global reach Miscellaneous

RIT’s professors are often featured in international publications and conferences showcasing their expertise and innovative research. This global publicity can often have a wide impact that goes beyond a simple news article.

For example, in 2005, Nabil Nasr, director of RIT’s Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies, was a keynote speaker at the International Conference on Sustainable Manufacturing in Shanghai, China. Professor Nasr’s presentation was well received and he was featured in several national news articles covering the event. Following the conference and in part due to the positive publicity, RIT was able to set up several partnerships with Chinese universities to collaborate on sustainable research.

Those efforts continued this week when a government sponsored delegation of professors from Tianjin University of Technology in Tianjin, China, visited campus to discuss new research in remanufacturing and pollution prevention with RIT faculty and CIMS engineers. The visit is part of a tour of American universities designed to increase scientific collaboration and research between Chinese and American academic institutions. The Chinese contingent will next visit Yale University before returning to China in mid-February, and CIMS is now setting up follow up meetings in China to further combined research efforts.

I sometimes feel that the broader benefits of good public relations are often overlooked or underestimated, but examples such as the collaboration with Tianjin illustrate how growing global awareness can lead to enhanced opportunities for individual researchers as well as promote RIT’s brand to the international community.

In fact, RIT may one day be as well known in China as Yao Ming! OK probably not but I can always dream!
