The Gannett Project starts its lecture series this year—Visionaries in Motion—with a scientist who has awed the general public. Janna Levin will be on campus next week to give her talks “Minds, Machines and the Cosmos: Is the Universe Infinite?” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Webb Auditorium in the James E. Booth Building, and “Chaos and Black Hole Binaries” at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation, building 74, room 2060. Both talks are free.
Levin is a physicist and a theoretical cosmologist at Columbia University with a knack for communicating beyond her scientific circle. She’s like translator, explaining the big ideas of her field to those who don’t speak the language. If you’re intrigued, check out her books A Madman Dreams of Turing Machines—which won a PEN award—and How the Universe Got Its Spots.
