Wide World of Tiger Sports – April 10 Sports

After a week of sight-seeing and excessive walking (nearly 33,000 steps last Thursday alone, guess I am living well, had to pass on eating well) in our nation’s capital, I am back for another action-packed week of This Week in Tiger Sports. I must have brought some decent weather back, because it actually hit 70 here on Monday.

The men’s lacrosse program will celebrate its 40th anniversary and honor the Class of 2008 on Saturday against Eastern Connecticut State. On Wednesday, RIT (6-6, 4-2 Empire 8) helped themselves out in the race for an Empire 8 playoff berth with a win over Alfred. We have five teams fighting for four Empire 8 playoff berths. Here are the up-to-date standings.

Baseball (6-6) will finally open up Empire 8 play this weekend at Ithaca, if the weather cooperates. Last weekend, they exploded for 38 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Hilbert and then split a low-scoring doubleheader against Brockport. Yesterday, the Tigers dropped a pair of games to #19 University of Rochester. Junior Anthony Culotta was named the RIT Male Athlete of the Week.

Softball (9-11, 4-2 Empire 8) played eight games over a five-day stretch, going 4-4. The bats woke up in a sweep of Utica on Saturday, while the pitching was sensational on Sunday against Elmira. Senior Rachel Richards was the RIT Female Athlete of the Week. The women also travel to Ithaca on Saturday for a tough Empire 8 doubleheader.

Women’s lacrosse (4-4, 2-3 Empire 8) is playing well, but more than likely needs a win at home against Ithaca on Saturday to garner a berth in the Empire 8 playoffs. They are fresh off a blowout win over Hartwick on Sunday.

Men’s Tennis (2-4, 1-3) is in action on Thursday at Oswego and Alfred on Saturday. Two wins would get the Tigers back to .500.

Outdoor track and field had some good performances on both the men’s and women’s sides at the U of R Alumni Invitational on Sunday. The Tigers are back at U of R on Sunday for the second straight week. Half of the team will also go to the Bucknell Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The captains for the 2008-09 men’s hockey team were announced. Three excellent choices.

Hopefully, it does not snow this weekend, even though we are predicted to get some fluffy precipitation at some point. I guess the weather of the last few days was just a tease.
