Explore the field of neuroscience and the tools used to study the human brain over 4 weeks in England.

  • Learn how to use an MRI scanner at the University of Sussex, one of the best-rated medical schools in England.
  • Gain experience with a highly specialized piece of medical equipment - a unique skill for imaging science, biomedical engineering, and health sciences majors.
  • Spend four weeks near the seaside resort town of Brighton, England.
  • Explore London on weekends - a one-hour train ride from the University of Sussex.

The study of the mind and brain has been referred to as the "final frontier" of science and engineering. The endeavor is multi-disciplinary and requires training the new generation of neuroscientists and engineers to work in teams and tackle complex, multi-faceted challenges in technique development and experimental design. This course will introduce you to the field of neuroscience and the tools used to image and study the human brain. You will have the opportunity to learn how to use an MRI scanner housed in one of the best-rated medical schools in England. In addition to getting hands-on experience with MR-imaging of healthy subjects, you will learn about clinical imaging and will have the opportunity to interact with the technical and clinical staff at the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre at the University of Sussex in the UK.

The application deadline for the summer 2024 program has been reached. Contact the faculty director to inquire about next year's program (Iris Asllani, icabme@rit.edu).

  • BIME 346 - Special Topics: Imaging the Human Brain (3 credits)
This course will introduce students to tools and concepts of human brain imaging in vivo. The course has a lecture and a lab component. Lectures will cover the fundamental principles of neuroscience, including brain anatomy and physiology, and neuroimaging techniques, with a focus on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). During lab sessions, students will use a 3 Tesla MRI scanner to acquire brain images during rest and activation (fMRI). Part of the lab sessions will focus on the assessment of image quality control and processing. The venue for the course will be the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre (CISC), University of Sussex, UK.

You will stay in student housing on the Sussex Campus and have your own bedroom with a shared bathroom, kitchen, and living space.

Sussex University is in Falmer, near Brighton - an exciting holiday destination with a range of tourist attractions. There is a vibrant nightlife, a variety of restaurants and cafes, and events and festivals throughout the summer.
