City students to learn about business concepts

Saunders College of Business and Junior Achievement of Rochester are teaming up to educate children in grades K-6 about business, economics and free enterprise.

Saunders College of Business will go “elementary” at Clara Barton School No. 2 on Friday, April 29.

The business college at Rochester Institute of Technology and Junior Achievement of Rochester are teaming up with the Rochester City School District for the all-day learning marathon to educate children K-6 about business, economics and free enterprise. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the elementary school, located at 186 Reynolds St.

“It’s never too early to start familiarizing young people with business concepts,” said Peter Rosenthal, senior associate director of student services at Saunders College. “Our country’s free-market system depends on the contributions of, and decisions made by, citizens and workers. They make choices every day about their needs and wants, and they need to address constraints on resources such as time and money.

“This is the 11th year that we have matched a Saunders College of Business student with an RIT alumnus or other working professional for a day to introduce these economic concepts through discussions and hands-on activities.”

One of the Saunders College students returning to the classroom is Miguel Lopez, who is in the RIT Honors Program and graduates this May with a degree in management information systems.

“Whenever you get the chance to interact and share your knowledge with youngsters, it proves how much you truly care about giving back,” said Lopez, who hails from Puerto Rico and was a team captain of the RIT men’s basketball team.

“This program gives me the opportunity to do this along with playing tag at lunch! I love making a difference and enjoy the students. Teaching a class makes me feel alive.”
