Exploring Portugal: Vitomir Pavičić’s Erasmus+ experience

Vitomir Pavičić, a sophomore Global Business Management student and cofounder of a Project01 startup, is taking his studies and entrepreneurial interests to new heights on Erasmus+ in Porto. Alongside exploring a new culture. Vitomir chose Católica Porto Business School because it offered the course he was interested in. He was also drawn to the welcoming atmosphere and relaxed vibe of the campus.

New academic system

Academically, he found the system quite different from RIT Croatia, with longer classes, some lasting up to three hours, and each course including both a theory and a workshop session every week. He notes that exams are mostly final, with few midterms, and although he prefers RIT Croatia’s system, the experience has challenged him in new ways.

Beyond the classroom, Vitomir gained fresh perspectives by meeting students from all over the world: “I met people from many different countries and cultures, and spending time with them really changed how I think about certain things.” Living abroad also challenged him to communicate in new ways: “Since I don’t speak Portuguese, and many Portuguese people don’t speak English, I learned to communicate with gestures until I picked up enough basics to explain myself.”

Exploring experiences, embracing growth

Outside of classes, Vitomir has fully embraced Portuguese culture and activities. “I was really excited to try surfing here, and it became one of my favorite experiences. Even though you spend most of the time waiting for waves, it’s relaxing, especially when you’re with friends.” He also discovered a hidden gem, a beachside basketball court, where he unwinds after a long day, explaining there’s nothing better than shooting hoops while listening to the waves and looking at the stars. Living abroad and exploring these experiences has also accelerated his personal growth: “This is the first time I’ve lived on my own, which comes with many new responsibilities. When it comes to my work and studies, I became more serious and disciplined because I have less time than usual.”

For students considering a study abroad experience, Vitomir has simple advice: “If you have the chance, do it. You meet so many new people, experience another culture, and see what life is like outside of Croatia. I can guarantee you won’t regret it!”
