The recent total solar eclipse over Rochester provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on Earth for two faculty-researchers and their students to capture data about the effects of the sun’s energy during a total eclipse.

RIT’s co-op program is one of the oldest in the nation, beginning in 1912. More than 5,000 RIT students typically complete a co-op each year.

Bing Yan, an assistant professor of electrical engineering, is building a more coordinated system to manage different variables affecting grid energy generation, storage, transmission, and distribution—from extreme weather events to the addition of solar and wind power.

RIT is one of six U.S. universities named as part of an international partnership to improve competitiveness in computer chip design, development, and manufacturing. Micron Corp. and the National Science Foundation announced the partnership and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the 2023 G7 Summit in Japan.

RIT is building upon its successful history of semiconductor development and research through an expansion to its cleanroom facility with help from New York state.

RIT will receive $2 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce to update and expand its Semiconductor Fabrication Lab to accommodate research in semiconductor technologies and prepare the workforce for the growing domestic microelectronics manufacturing industry. The funding was included as part of the fiscal year 2023 omnibus funding package.

Becoming the Silicon Valley of the Northeast may have as much power as the computer chips that will soon be designed and developed in the upstate New York region. The recent Chips 101 event, hosted by RIT on Nov. 16, kept to that premise. More than 50 regional government and corporate representatives learned how computer chips are designed and manufactured—and how universities, government, and workforce development initiatives will contribute to this area.
