This team has developed a scaled continuous Black Soldier Fly Larvae composting process cable of processing 500 lbs of food waste a week. The team designed and optimized all pre and post treatment steps as well as designed the bioreactor so that food may be added each day, frass can be removed, and the larvae are facilitated to exit the reactor to pupate. The team had to consider how to deal with excess or insufficient moisture, bones, rogue larvae or flies, and contamination in the food waste from other organisms and user error (metal, plastic, wood).
