Title Change

Overview

If a new title is the ONLY change to a currently registered degree or certificate program, an abbreviated process is available which includes a market analysis, several required internal approvals, and NYSED submission. This guidance page is not applicable if ANY other changes are being made to the currently registered program.

Market Analysis

A market analysis is the first step for title changes to existing programs. The purpose of the market analysis is to ensure that there is sufficient demand for the proposed new title. Learn how to request a market analysis.

In instances where the market analysis and recommendation from Enrollment Management suggest that the title change should not come to market, the Dean will decide how to proceed and can add a statement regarding actions, if any, that were taken with respect to the market analysis. The Dean’s statement can accompany the complete market analysis and application that it is sent to the Office of the Vice Provost.

Process

After the Market Analysis is complete and approved by the Dean, complete a NYSED Title Request Form.

Required Approvals

Approval is required from the department and college curriculum committees. Approval from ICC, Graduate Council, or Faculty Senate is NOT required when the only change is a new title to an existing program.

After approvals from the department and college curriculum committees have been secured, the Dean will forward the application to the Office of the Vice Provost.

The Office of the Vice Provost will review the proposal and request approval from the Provost and NYSED.

After NYSED Approval

Once the proposed title change has been approved by NYSED, the following actions will occur:

  • The Office of the Vice Provost will work with the college and Enrollment Management to determine a first admit term for the new title.
  • The Office of the Vice Provost will send an official campus notification to the applicable campus departments and the applicable Dean/Associate Dean.
  • The new title will be added to the undergraduate or graduate bulletin and RIT Programs of Study website during the annual bulletin process.

The proposed new title MAY NOT be advertised or admit students until a formal approval has been received. Refer to the following document for instructions regarding promotion of the new modality: Marketing, Recruitment and Communication Guidelines for RIT’s New or Changed Academic Programs.
