Artist Interview: Madeline Rile Smith '20
RIT City Art Space's Artist Short Sesh features conversations with artists in the College of Art and Design about their work. The artist interview series, started by Gallery Director John Aäsp, originally launched on Instagram.
In the second episode, Madeline Rile Smith '20 MFA (Glass) provides insight into art school and controversial glass-blowing, and delivers an exclusive performance.
"I went to get my MFA because at the time there was a huge disconnect between the work I was making and the ideas I had," Smith said. "So I was making flamework sculpture based off of a love of the process, but I didn't really relate to it at all. I sensed that there was a lot of growth that I could explore in grad school, but I couldn't really achieve it alone, by myself, in a studio."
