Association of Medical Illustrators Award of Merit
An animation visualizing the interconnectedness between different biological structures that was created by May Jiang ‘24 (medical illustration) received notable recognition from the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI).
The project, “Macro Micro,” was included in the Student Motion and Interactive Media category of AMI’s 2023 Online Salon showcase, for which it also received an Award of Merit. Jiang’s animation was the final project in her 3D Animation of Organic Forms course. Students were tasked with producing a scientific/medical animation using techniques learned throughout the semester.
“In biology, various techniques like light microscopy, electron microscopy, cryo-EM, and X-ray diffraction are used to visualize structures,” Jiang’s project description reads. “However, due to technical limitations, each technique has a specific resolution range that they’re viable in. With each technique having its own unique visual appearance, it can be challenging to understand how structures transition between different resolution ranges. This animation bridges that gap by creating a seamless transition between resolutions and showcasing how they interconnect.”
