Bio
Dr. Ehsan Rashedi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Director of the Biomechanics and Ergonomics Laboratory. His research lies at the intersection of biomechanics, ergonomics and human factors, sensing technologies, human-centered artificial intelligence, and rehabilitation engineering. His work seeks to understand human movement and performance and to develop data-driven technologies that improve safety, mobility, health, and interaction with intelligent systems across occupational, clinical, and community settings.
Dr. Rashedi’s research integrates experimental human movement analysis with wearable sensing, computer vision, machine learning, and emerging interactive technologies. His research spans wearable and vision-based assessment of human movement, ergonomic risk assessment, human–robot interaction and collaboration, assistive technologies, digital health, and rehabilitation. Across these areas, his group is particularly interested in translating biomechanical and behavioral data into meaningful measures of human function and into technologies that can support safer movement, better decision-making, and more effective human–technology interaction.
A growing emphasis of Dr. Rashedi’s research is AI-enabled rehabilitation, mobility assessment, and fall prevention. His current NIH-funded research focuses on developing and evaluating smartphone-based digital coaching approaches to support fall prevention and safer mobility among stroke survivors. This work builds on his broader research in human movement assessment and combines engineering, rehabilitation, sensing, and human-centered design to develop technologies that can ultimately support people in their homes and communities. In parallel, his laboratory continues to investigate occupational biomechanics, musculoskeletal injury risk, wearable sensing, human–robot collaboration, and intelligent methods for understanding human activities and physical demands.
Dr. Rashedi received his B.S. and first M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology. He subsequently earned a second M.S. degree and his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech. Prior to joining RIT, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Virginia Tech, where his research included exoskeletons, human gait and muscle fatigue, textile-based sensing technologies, and head-worn display systems.
Dr. Rashedi’s work has been published in journals spanning biomechanics, ergonomics, human factors, and safety science, including Ergonomics, Journal of Biomechanics, Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, PLOS ONE, and Safety Science. Through the Biomechanics and Ergonomics Laboratory, he collaborates across engineering, computing, healthcare, rehabilitation, and industry to advance human-centered technologies that connect rigorous measurement of human performance with practical solutions for safety, mobility, rehabilitation, and quality of life.

RIT wins award to develop game design training platform as part of NASA’s Moon-to-Mars Mission
RIT faculty-researchers will develop a game-design training system that could help astronauts maintain balance, motor skills, and other cognitive functions while in space. NASA, in partnership with the National Space Grant Foundation, has selected six university teams, including RIT, to develop innovative design ideas that will help NASA advance and execute its Moon to Mars exploration objectives.
