Bio

Justin Pelletier is the Director of the Cyber Range and Training Center in the ESL Global Cybersecurity Institute at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). As a component of this work, he oversees the premier worldwide offensive cybersecurity competition (Global Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition), which brings together the top ethical hackers from across the planet. As a Professor of Practice in the Department of Computing Security, Dr. Pelletier teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels, trains and leads student teams to perform security assessments for partner organizations, and helped to bring the Hacking for Defense initiative to RIT. He holds a PhD in Information Assurance and Security, an MBA in Entrepreneurship, and a BS in Computer Science. Prior to joining academia, Dr. Pelletier was a civil servant in the intelligence community. He is a combat veteran and currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

CSEC-462
Network Security and Forensics
3 Credits
This course investigates the many facets of network security and forensics. Students will examine the areas of intrusion detection, evidence collection, network auditing, network security policy design and implementation as well as preparation for and defense against attacks. The issues and facilities available to both the intruder and data network administrator will be examined and evaluated with appropriate laboratory exercises to illustrate their effect.
CSEC-472
Authentication and Security Models
3 Credits
Access control and authentication systems are some of the most critical components of cybersecurity ecosystems. This course covers the theory, design, and implementation of systems used in identification, authentication, authorization, and accountability processes with a focus on trust at each layer. Students will examine formal models of access control systems and approaches to system accreditation, the application of cryptography to authentication systems, and the implementation of IAAA principles in modern operating systems. A special focus will be placed on preparing students to research and write about future topics in this area.
CSEC-490
Capstone in Computing Security
3 Credits
This is a capstone course for students in the computing security program. Students will review a series of short modules on topics such as teamwork, project management, report writing, and presentations, and will work in teams to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world projects in various areas of computing security. Projects may require performing security analysis of systems, networks, and software, etc., devising and implementing security solutions in real world applications.

Independent Study in CSEC
1 - 6 Credits
Students will work with a supervising faculty member on a project of mutual interest. Project design and evaluation will be determined through discussion with the supervising faculty member and documented through completion of an independent study form to be filed with the department of computing security.
CSEC-799
Independent Study
1 - 3 Credits
The graduate independent study offers students the opportunity to investigate a topic not covered in an available course in the MS program in conjunction with a faculty sponsor. Working cooperatively, the faculty sponsor and the student draft a proposal of the work to be completed, the deliverables expected from the student, the number of credits assigned, and the means by which the student’s work will be evaluated. The proposal must be approved by the graduate program director before a student can be registered for independent study.
