AssessMe project recognized among Europe's top innovations in higher education
AssessMe, an innovative AI-powered tool developed by RIT Croatia faculty members Dr. Alan Mutka and Dr. Martin Žagar, has been recognized as the third top project in the Digitalization category for the prestigious PROFFORMANCE International Higher Education Teacher Award 2024/25!
The PROFFORMANCE International Higher Education Teacher Award is organized by the prominent PROFFORMANCE+ consortium, a collaborative initiative involving several European ministries, including the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Youth. This partnership underscores the project's commitment to advancing the quality and competitiveness of higher education across Europe, celebrating excellence and innovation in higher education across Europe. For AssessMe to be recognized among the best, it highlights the exceptional quality and forward-thinking approach of our faculty. This achievement is even more significant considering it was selected from a competitive pool of 286 submitted projects from institutions across Europe.
Setting New Standards in Programming Education
AssessMe is an advanced AI-powered software solution designed to enhance and preserve academic integrity, particularly in programming education. In an era where generative AI tools can produce diverse code solutions, AssessMe addresses the challenge of identifying original work and and ensuring genuine learning.
"AssessMe shifts the focus from the final solution to the actual process of creating code," explains Dr. Alan Mutka, Area Head for the Web and Mobile Computing BS at RIT Croatia, who is also the driving force behind the project. "It systematically records data such as code changes, keystroke timings, and activity within the integrated development environment. By analyzing this data using machine learning, AssessMe generates learning metrics that help assess the originality of work, identify learning difficulties, and evaluate contributions in team projects."
This innovative approach allows our faculty to gain deeper insights into student progress, offering valuable feedback that supports their development. For instance, tasks that typically require several hours can be completed much faster with AI-generated solutions. AssessMe helps identify these patterns, flagging cases for further review and discussion with students, all while maintaining transparency and trust through encrypted activity logs.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Alan Mutka and Dr. Martin Žagar for this outstanding achievement! Their work truly exemplifies the innovative spirit and high academic standards at RIT Croatia. To learn more about the AssessMe project, visit https://assessme.com.hr/.
