Departments and Schools

From design to production, to operation, the College of Engineering Technology prepares students to meet the existing and future needs of industry through functional teaching and hands-on experience. Made up of five departments and schools, each is dedicated to the sustainable, technical, and professional interests of our students. Explore your love of engineering technology in a department that meets and fulfills your career aspirations.

School of Media Sciences

The School of Media Sciences strives to be on the leading edge of graphic communications and gives students the opportunity to address real-world problems within the industry. Students graduate with unsurpassed skills in all areas that encompass graphic communications, from design production to digital content management to typography. You will learn how to design, distribute, and manage content to reach audiences on various platforms. Our diverse curriculums might see students design customized marketing communications to increase advertising revenues, create new ink formulas for eye-popping retail displays, or implement social media plans for businesses. It’s all done in an ambitious environment, too. Our extensive facilities — outfitted with first-rate equipment and technology — place students in an ideal setting to develop the pioneering solutions RIT is known for.

Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology

The Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology (MMET) is comprised of three distinct disciplines that offer intense experiential education in manufacturing, mechanical, or electrical mechanical engineering technology. The students from these disciplines graduate as engineers with the ability to adapt, grow, and succeed in a highly competitive engineering workplace. Full time placements upon graduation have ranged from 95% to 98%.

Department of Packaging Science

RIT’s packaging science program, established in 1972, is one of the most unique and respected in the country. One of only a handful in the nation to offer the program, the discipline provides students exposure to laboratory experience and real-life problem solving. Embedded into the program is the required full-time co-op with a company, and RIT is the only institute in the country that requires all packaging science students to experience this opportunity. This allows students to develop their professional skills, expand their real-world experience, and, most importantly, broaden their industry contacts. RIT's relationship with industry leaders and the skills students obtain in development, sales, and purchasing results in professional careers within this multi-billion dollar industry. This relationship, along with the faculty being packaging professionals, ensures that students acquire the most current technological knowledge base.

Department of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology

The Department of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology (ECTET) prepares students for successful careers in industry or academia by providing a foundation of engineering theory through application-based instruction. A laboratory- and project-intensive curriculum, taught by faculty dedicated to teaching and having a background in industry, offers students an engineering education rich in experiential learning. Co-op, study abroad, research opportunities, industrial connections, and modern facilities further enhance this relevant and engaging educational experience.

The ECTET department fosters a culture of support and nurtures the academic and professional growth of each student. Caring faculty and small class sizes ensure close student-faculty interactions and student-student collaborations.

Department of Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Management and Safety

The programs offered by RIT’s Department of Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Management and Safety (CETEMS) represent the professions central to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the built environment. If your passion lies in designing new bridges, buildings, or the vast array of public works; helping manage construction projects; helping organizations move toward a safer, environmentally responsible, and more sustainable future; or the development, operation, and maintenance of buildings, you’re in the right place.

With an emphasis on practical, applied, and stimulating experiential learning, our programs’ coursework, coupled with co-operative work experiences, can help position you to make tangible contributions, right away, in your chosen profession. Students have the opportunity to participate with faculty and other students outside the classroom in student clubs (ASCE, AGC, ASSE, SEAL) and student competition teams (Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, ASC CM). These club activities and competitions give students an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to solve real-world problems in design, construction, and environmental sustainability.
