John Morelli, faculty member in the College of Applied Science and Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology, was recently appointed chairperson of the civil engineering technology/environmental management and safety department in the college. He will lead the growing department, managing the health, safety, global environmental management and civil engineering technology programs.

“I am very confident that Dr. Morelli, a long serving CAST faculty member and colleague, will serve the civil engineering technology/environmental management and safety department staff, faculty and students well,” says Fred Walker, dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology. “I am pleased to share with you that Dr. Morelli received the unanimous support of the department faculty and staff as well as my personal support. I look forward to working with John as do I look forward to his leadership within the department.”

Morelli, a professional engineer, has served as the Russell C. McCarthy chair of the environmental management and safety program. During his tenure he developed the Environmental Management Leadership Initiative and Symposia, an international training program and conference for environmental professionals around the world.

“What makes a profession more than an occupation?” Morelli asked in an earlier interview. He explained that many students select the environmental management profession because of a passion for the environment. He has worked to ensure that the profession continues to contribute to businesses and organizations. “What is the role of an environmental manager? Where can we contribute and what should we be doing? Social responsibility and sustainability encompasses all.”

Morelli begins his new role on July 1. He replaces professor and former chairperson Abi Aghayere, who recently accepted a position as associate dean of academic affairs at the Goodwin College of Drexel University in Philadelphia.
