Overview for Product Design Option - Mechanical Engineering Technology BS
- Immersive co-op experiences in product design.
- Advanced course work and elective courses focus on robust design principles, plastic product design, product ideation, product development, innovation, applied finite element analysis, and manufacturing/mechanical systems.
The product design option allows for specialized study in all engineering aspects of product ideation, innovation, design confirmation, and design validation. The option focuses on the primary areas of developing robust designs that are optimized for manufacturing, customer, and environmental conditions that the product will experience during its entire life-cycle. This option is part of the mechanical engineering technology BS degree.
Courses in Product Design
The product design option begins with a course sequence that starts in the third year of the mechanical engineering technology major. This ensures that you have developed the foundational engineering skills needed for specialization in more advanced course work that focuses on the principles of developing new, innovative designs. Courses in product design include fundamental principles on generating and formulating product ideas, utilizing design for six sigma principles, and developing robust designs.

Careers and Experiential Learning
Cooperative Education
What’s different about an RIT education? It’s the career experience you gain by completing cooperative education and internships with top companies in every single industry. You’ll earn more than a degree. You’ll gain real-world career experience that sets you apart.
Co-ops and internships take your knowledge and turn it into know-how. Your engineering co-ops will provide hands-on experience that enables you to apply your engineering knowledge in professional settings while you make valuable connections between classwork and real-world applications.
All engineering majors are required to complete four blocks (48 weeks) of cooperative education experience. For students in the product design option, your co-ops will be with companies developing new products for the market place. A sampling of companies that hire RIT students for co-ops and for full-time employment include Apple, BorgWarner, Bosch, Boeing, Corning, General Dynamics, General Motors, Gulfstream, L3 Harris, Magna, Pratt & Whitney, Raytheon, SpaceX, Tesla, and Toyota to name a few.
