Daily Open Advising
The International Student Services office offers Open Advising through Zoom every day for two hours. Our schedule is below:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 2-4 p.m. EST
Tuesday, Thursday 10 a.m.-12 p.m. EST
Open Advising is meant for questions and issues that can be resolved quickly. Some examples include:
- SEVP portal reset
- Questions about travel that are not answered on the ISS Travel page
- CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT questions that are not answered on the website:

Appointment with an Advisor
Appointments with advisors are for longer or more in-depth conversations that may require an in-depth review of your records or discussing multiple steps. This includes but is not limited to:
- Complicated immigration or visa status questions
- Academic concerns that impact your immigration status (reduced course load, program extension, change of level)
- Planning and strategy for work permissions (CPT, OPT, STEM OPT)
- Financial hardship situations affecting your status
- Preparing for travel, reentry, or changes in dependent status
- Multiple questions that can’t be easily answered in a quick visit

After Hours Emergencies
ISS advisors may be reached in an emergency situation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Examples of emergencies are:
- being detained at a port of entry,
- being involved in an accident,
- family emergency.
In an emergency, you can reach an ISS advisor by contacting RIT Public Safety at 585-475-3333 or by texting 585-205-8333. These numbers should be used for emergencies only. For non-emergency situations, please contact us during normal business hours.
If you are in danger, need emergency medical assistance, need to report a crime that is in progress or that has just occurred or to report a fire or accident, then you need to contact the police or fire department by calling 911.
