Step-by-Step, How to Apply to Change Your Major

  1. Review Your Current Academic and Student Affairs Status: Make sure you meet the minimum 2.5 GPA requirement and have no academic or student affairs holds on your record.

  2. Research Your Desired Major: Review specific requirements and course offerings.

  3. Contact Your Current Academic Advisor: Your advisor can help guide you through the process and answer your questions.

  4. Meet with the College of Liberal Arts Undergraduate Program Director: Schedule a meeting to discuss your interest in the program and any additional requirements.

  5. Submit a Change of Program Application: Complete the application form and obtain signatures from both your current and new academic departments. Your new department in the College of Liberal Arts will send the completed form to the Registrar’s Office for processing. Monitor your student account to track that your Change of Program Application has been processed.

Academic Requirements

Changing from your current major to a major or program that is offered by the College of Liberal Arts requires: 

  1. Cumulative GPA Minimum of 2.5
    Exceptions: 
    If you have demonstrated success (grades of C or higher) in humanities and social science courses, we will consider your application even if your cumulative GPA is below 2.5. 
     
  2. Academic and Student Affairs Holds 
    You must not have any academic or student affairs holds on your record.

  3. Additional, program specific requirements: 

Must have taken at least one English course at RIT and earned a grade of C or higher.

 

Students with a cumulative GPA below the minimum required 2.5 may be considered for admission at the discretion of the program director.

Must have completed at least one college level Philosophy course with a grade of B- or better. The course can be either transferred in from another institution or have been completed at RIT.

In addition to the minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 2.5, PSYCH 101 with a grade of C- or better is required.
