Website – Accessibility

RIT strives to achieve WCAG level AA compliance throughout our web presence. According to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 defines how to make Web content more accessible to people with disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.

WCAG level AA guidelines include, but are not limited to:

  • All images should contain meaningful alt text. This alt text is used for screen readers to describe the image to a person with visual impairment. (This does not apply to decorative images, such as an arrow.)
  • All video must contain open or closed captioning.
  • All audio must contain a transcript at minimum, but captioned video of audio is preferred.
  • Do not auto-play audio or video. Only video with no audio can be auto-played, when used in a hero/banner image or in a similar fashion.
  • All textual links need 2 identifiers, not just color. This can include shape, size, position, style, icons, etc. (This does not apply to menus.)
  • To prevent seizures, nothing on the website can flash more than 3 times in one second.
  • All links must contain descriptive text. Links should not simply be “click here” or “read more.”
  • All form elements should have meaningful labels
  • Use heading tags to appropriately organize content
  • All pages should have meaningful page titles
  • Do not disable focus with CSS
  • When using iframes, use a meaningful title tag
  • Make sure that pdfs are accessible
  • Set lang=”eng” in the opening html tag
  • Validate html to ensure proper coding standards
  • Text needs a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text, and 3:1 for large text. Large text is defined as 18.67 px or larger AND bold.

Regarding contrast ratios, RIT has identified 2 different oranges to use throughout the site: RIT Brand orange and WCAG accessible orange:

RIT brand orange: #F76902

This color should be used whenever possible. This can be used for all background colors where orange is needed, as well as all fonts 18.67 px or larger and bold. This generally includes all headings and large links.

WCAG accessible orange: #C75300

This should be used when font size is smaller than 18.67 px, or when the font cannot be bolded for design reasons. This color SHOULD NOT be used as a solid background color.
