NTID Communication Studies and Services Department
The National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), a college under the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), provides a unique opportunity for college students to receive comprehensive communication services, including speech-language instruction with trained professionals in the Communication Studies and Services (CSS) Department.
Students receive instruction in 1:1 and/or small group settings, and they can participate in credit-bearing communication courses offered through the CSS Department as well.
Student Testimonials
It was my first time working with a person who respected my language and genuinely motivated to help me succeed. It made me realize hmm... maybe learning speech language is not bad after all. I started to work on my abilities outside the classroom and seek to continue improving myself.
[My instructor] did a great job of shaping her lessons to my goals. I was able to translate it real world situations versus just being told what I needed to do.
The activities immensely helped improve my confidence and learn new communication strategies as I negotiated the masked world and changed hearing levels. [My instructor] always comes up with new activities that challenge my comfort levels. I appreciate that because the SLP sessions are a safe space for me to test new communication tools, strategies, and practices.
With nearly every visit, [my instructor] offered new tools for me to practice and even followed up on the ones I had been given the week before. She is very orderly as well so she was always prepared for our session.
Really loved [my instructor]. She taught great and was very helpful. Highlight of the week honestly.
