The Osnabrück University program is run by RIT's affiliate partner, SUNY Oswego, and is a good fit for RIT Computer Science majors. Osnabrück University is a public research university in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany, with approximately 14,000 students. Founded in 1974, it is a relatively young and dynamic institution known for strong research and teaching in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Law, and Economics. For RIT students, the spring semester—running from March to July—is typically the best fit, as the fall semester follows the German academic calendar from October through February and does not align as well with U.S. schedules.
Osnabrück’s Cognitive Science program is an interdisciplinary program taught entirely in English and well-suited for RIT Computer Science and other computing-related majors. Coursework spans psychology, linguistics, logic, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience, with popular options for RIT students including Computational Linguistics, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence and Logic Programming, all of which have established RIT equivalencies. Additional English-taught courses are available in areas such as economics, social sciences, and game development, alongside opportunities to study German language and culture.
While the Cognitive Science program is taught in English, one to two years of prior German language study is recommended. The German academic calendar differs from the U.S., resulting in a longer winter break (late December through mid-March) and a shorter summer break (early July through late August) for participating RIT students.
