First Day of Class

The first day of class sets the foundation for a successful semester. Whether you are teaching for the first time or refining your approach, these key steps will help you create an engaging and organized start.

Preparing for the First Day of Class

Send your students an email before the first class to let them know what materials to bring so they are prepared.

Visit your assigned classroom in advance to test technology, assess seating arrangements, and familiarize yourself with the space. Arriving as early as possible on the first day ensures a smooth start.

Greet students as they enter and encourage brief introductions. Creating a sense of community early helps foster engagement and participation throughout the semester.

Instead of starting with the syllabus, introduce a thought-provoking question, a brief discussion, or an interactive activity related to your course.

Highlight key aspects of the syllabus, such as learning outcomes, major assignments, and classroom policies. Provide a digital or printed copy for reference rather than reading it verbatim. Consider creating a low-stakes quiz or activity surrounding student understanding of the syllabus.

Review attendance policies, participation expectations, and any required materials. Direct students to university resources such as academic support centers, technology assistance, and accessibility services.

Use the first day to foster a welcoming atmosphere where all students feel valued. Invite them to help shape shared expectations for how the class will treat one another, emphasizing respect, inclusivity, and openness to diverse perspectives.
