Key Steps for a Purposeful First Class

The first class session sets the tone for the entire semester. Here are four practical steps for launching your course successfully:

  1. Communicate before day one. Send students a welcome message outlining what to bring and how to prepare so they arrive confident and ready.
  2. Spark interaction and curiosity early. Facilitate an ice breaker, compelling question, puzzle, or demonstration that hints at the intellectual journey ahead.
  3. Rethink the syllabus marathon. Instead of reading your syllabus, distribute it to students  and facilitate a syllabus scavenger hunt or small group activity. As a follow-up, highlight just a few key aspects, such as outcomes, major assignments, and course mechanics.
  4. End intentionally. Strive to use the full class period but leave time for a clear closing. For instance, giving a low-stakes quiz, poll, or exit ticket can help you learn about your students and signal what skills and habits will matter.
