“When in the embrace of Hell I can’t dispel the tales of life that is full of strife.”This line is from the poem Captured and Convicted, written by Jalil Muntaqim, that is included in Doing Time to Cleanse My Mind, a poetry anthology featuring works by inmates at the Auburn Correctional Facility in Auburn, N.Y. The book emerged from a poetry workshop at the maximum-security prison designed to enhance the writing and literary skills of inmates and provide a constructive emotional outlet. The selections capture the fears, regrets and hopes of the contributors, many of whom are serving life sentences.
