The College of Science at Rochester Institute of Technology is sponsoring a presentation by Dickson Despommier, author of The City as Ecosystem. The lecture will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, in the Van Peursem Auditorium, located in RIT’s Gosnell Building. It is part of the college’s distinguished speakers series.
Despommier is a trained microbiologist with a doctorate degree from the University of Notre Dame. A professor of public health at Columbia University, his current project is working to produce large amounts of food crops in tall buildings situated in densely populated urban areas, an idea called vertical farming.
The lecture will cover Despommier’s current work in vertical farms and his thoughts regarding urban behavior change and sustainability. Despommier believes that cities should emulate the behavior of an eco-system in order to establish a sustainable urban way of life that creates no waste.
His vertical farm was featured in the October issue of Scientific American. For more information on vertical farming, visit www.verticalfarm.com.
