RIT’s School of Design is ranked 11th among “The World’s 25 Best Design Schools.”

Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Design is ranked 11th among “The World’s 25 Best Design Schools” in a new survey conducted by Business Insider magazine.

The rankings are based on the percentage of schools judged “somewhat valuable, valuable, or extremely valuable,” by industry professionals who responded to the survey. More than two thirds (66.9 percent) rated RIT’s School of Design “extremely valuable” or “valuable.” Among the 633 respondents, 87.8 percent said they studied or participated in a college-level design program; most are either product designers (30.3 percent) or art directors (26.9 percent).

“Rochester Institute of Technology’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences produces some of the most prepared, career-oriented designers in the workforce,” one respondent says in the survey. “The programs feature small class sizes, working professionals as professors, and top-of-the-line technology. The quirky blend of technical and art-oriented students help to mold the innovative thinkers. If you want your first pick of jobs out of college, come to RIT.”

RIT’s School of Design offers internationally recognized degree programs in graphic design, interior design, industrial design, new media design, 3-D digital graphics and computer graphics design. Computer skills, design perspectives, career preparation and exposure to the related areas of publishing, photography, engineering and information technology are integrated into the curriculum. The School of Design is one of six schools within the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at RIT.

“Today’s designers not only need to be highly talented, they have to show companies — especially those where design and creativity are at the core of their businesses — that they are prepared to meet their demanding requirements,” says Lorraine Justice, dean of the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. “RIT’s School of Design works hard and takes pride in responding to the needs of our students, and ultimately their employers, which this latest survey of industry professionals certainly recognizes.”

The Business Insider ranking marks the third time in six years that RIT’s School of Design has been ranked as one of the top design schools globally. BusinessWeek named RIT among the world’s top design programs in back-to-back years in 2006 and 2007.
