Exploration and Undecided Degrees

If you’re interested in business but not sure which major is right for you, Business Exploration lets you take up to a year and a half to try out RIT’s seven business majors before committing. You’ll explore courses in accounting, finance, global business management, hospitality and tourism management, management information systems, marketing, or supply chain management while staying on track for graduation. Advisors are there every step of the way to help you pick courses and figure out which path matches your interests and career goals.

The First-Year Experience: Biz 1+2
As part of business exploration, you’ll take Biz 1+2, a two-semester course where all first-year business students work together as a cohort. You’ll build a business plan from start to finish and get hands-on exposure to a variety of business disciplines. This experience helps you confirm your major, explore a new one, or even consider a double major, giving you a real head start on your RIT business journey.

Interested in computing but not sure which major fits you best? Then Computing Exploration is the perfect way to dive in. You’ll get to try courses in computer science, cybersecurity, web development, and more while exploring six of RIT’s computing majors. You’ll also meet faculty, explore labs, and get a feel for different career paths before deciding on a major. You can stay in the program for up to a year, and an academic advisor will help you pick courses, plan your schedule, and explore minors and career options. All the credits you earn in this program count toward any of RIT’s computing majors, so you stay on track for graduation. Plus, you’ll take a seminar that gives a full overview of all the computing majors so you can make an informed choice.

If you love engineering but aren’t sure which major is right for you, Engineering Exploration lets you spend up to a year trying out RIT’s engineering programs while staying on track to graduate on time. You’ll start with a seminar that gives you a full overview of each major and the career paths they lead to, and all your first-year courses count toward any engineering degree. This gives you the time to figure out which program fits your interests and goals, and as long as you’re in good academic standing and complete Calculus I, you’re guaranteed a spot in any Kate Gleason College of Engineering major.

If you’re curious about engineering, tech, sustainability, or hands-on problem solving but aren’t sure which major fits you best, Engineering Technology Exploration lets you spend up to a year exploring all nine majors in RIT’s College of Engineering Technology while staying on track to graduate. You’ll take foundational courses that count toward any degree, dive into hands-on labs and projects, and learn about the career paths for each program. This program gives you the freedom to discover your interests early, tackle real-world problems, and figure out which major matches your passions all while being part of a supportive community that wants to see you succeed.

You’ll get one-on-one advising, meet with faculty, and explore hundreds of courses across the College of Liberal Arts. This program lets you dive into different fields, discover your strengths and interests, and think about your future career path before committing to a major—all while completing the required liberal arts, math, and science courses that count toward your degree.

You’ll get a hands-on look at both photography majors and see what each has to offer. Learn about the courses, projects, and career paths for the BFA in Photographic and Imaging Arts, with options like advertising photography, fine art, photojournalism, or visual media, as well as the BS in Photographic Sciences. This exploration path gives you up to a year to try out both majors while finishing your general education and liberal arts courses, so you can figure out what inspires you most before committing.

Spend up to a year trying out different disciplines like ceramics, furniture design, glass, metals and jewelry, printmaking, painting, or sculpture and expanded forms, all while staying on track for graduation. You’ll work with an academic advisor to pick courses that match your interests and prepare a portfolio as part of the process.
