I created –Scape by shaping and forming copper using a process known as chasing and repoussé—hammering metal to create a form with an embossed design. The metal was hammered on the front and back to refine the piece. The coloring techniques that I used to finish the work involved creating layers of colored pencil over itself to achieve a color blend and create visible highlights throughout the piece.
–Scape was inspired by the wind as it might roll over hills on a desert plain. Like much of my work, my goal is to give physical form to the unseen, which in this case is the movement of the wind as it moves over a modulating open plain. At a single moment, they exist in the same space and time as the ground, defining its shape from below.
In my more recent work, I have been expanding this translation to include sound waves, which can be heard or felt but not seen. Sound waves exist as forces or pressures like the tingling sensation that runs up your spine as notes come together in perfect harmony. The effect can involve the building of tension and can end with a release.
