Hispanic engineering students host 'science night'

Noche de Ciencias will provide hands-on workshops for students, college and financial aid programs for parents

May 3 UPDATE: This event has been canceled.

Area teens in 11th and 12th grades and their parents can experience Noche de Ciencias, a night of science, an event to promote interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the STEM disciplines. Hosted by the student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Rochester Institute of Technology, the event takes place 5–8 p.m. Friday, May 3, in RIT’s Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences auditorium.

Registration for the free event is open and participants can register online by April 19.

Teens will be able to participate in hands-on workshops such as building balloon-powered cars and designing wind turbines led by chapter members and RIT faculty. Workshops on preparation for college, financial aid and scholarship options with university admissions staff are available for parents. All workshops will be presented in both English and Spanish. Dinner will be provided to attendees after the workshops.

“The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is brought together by heritage and social responsibility to improve the equality of all people through the use of science and technology,” says Karina Roundtree, president of the student chapter and a fourth-year mechanical engineering major. “Here at RIT, we strive to achieve this vision by increasing educational opportunities, promoting professional and personal growth, and carrying out our social responsibility to be involved in education, business and community service.”
