Hospitality alumni honored for achievements

Dan Farrell ’81, general manager of Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, hosted the world’s best golfers this past summer for the PGA Championship, and spent some time with Carol Whitlock (right), chair of RIT’s Hospitality and Tourism Management Department, during the event. Farrell will be recognized for his contributions to the field of club and food service management industry at a ceremony during this week’s Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend.

When Dan Farrell, general manager of Oak Hill Country Club, hosted one of golf’s biggest events this past summer, the spotlight shone on the professional golfers from around the world here for the tournament. This week, the spotlight will be on Farrell as he is presented the Sarah Margaret Gillam Memorial Award from his alma mater. The Gillam award is given by RIT to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of club and food service management.

Farrell ’81 is one of several alumni who will be honored by RIT’s School of International Hospitality and Service Innovation Alumni Awards at a reception and ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in the University Gallery in James E. Booth Hall. The ceremony is part of RIT’s Brick City Homecoming & Family Weekend.

Other awardees from the school, part of RIT’s College of Applied Science and Technology, are:

Dr. Richard Marecki Memorial Award: Joseph “Mick” LaLopa ’89; associate professor and associate department head, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Purdue University

Dr. Paul Kazmierski Memorial Award: Sandy Heerkens ’83, ’86, ’96; HR Business Partner, Xerox Corp.

Entrepreneurial Award: Louis Gagliano ’93, ’94; owner, Harlem Flo

International Award: Don Hudspeth ’99; president and dean, American College of Management and Technology, Croatia

Special Service Award: Jayne Downes ’08; professional adviser, RIT College of Applied Science and Technology

Student Recognition Award: Evan Coyne ’13; event operation voyager, The Ritz Carlton Hotel
