The William Harris Gallery, formerly known as the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences (SPAS) gallery, presents its first exhibition in its newly renovated space on the campus of Rochester Institute of Technology.

“The State of Things,” a collaborative exhibition by RIT senior fine art photography students, opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 7, and runs through March 21. A closing reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 19.

“The State of Things celebrates the aesthetic and cultural explorations of graduating fine art students as they begin the next phase in their journey as young emerging artists,” said Therese Mulligan, professor and administrative chair of RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. “This is the capstone event of their study at RIT.”

The exhibition showcases the work of 28 graduating seniors and encompasses a wide variety of subjects, from the autobiographical to the social landscape. Media of varying type is also featured, including analog and digital photographic processes, video and the handmade artist book.

The newly named William Harris Gallery has undergone significant renovations—made possible due to the generous bequest by William Harris, a 1949 alumnus of the former Graphic Arts and Photography program at RIT. This is the first renovation to the gallery in more than 30 years and includes additional display space, innovative installation features and an exhibition preparation area in order to meet the demands of new practices in the photographic arts and sciences. A formal opening of the William Harris Gallery is scheduled for September.

The William Harris Gallery is located on the third floor of Frank Gannett Hall at RIT. The gallery is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and by appointment on Sunday. For information, call 585-475-2716 or go to http://cias.rit.edu/william-harris-gallery.
