RIT is teaming up with Gallaudet University to prepare the next generation of artificial intelligence researchers and practitioners who will develop AI for everyone.

From satellite debris to artificial intelligence, double major students find research success by combining expertise in computer science and economics.

RIT researchers are zeroing in on quantum photonics, the creation, control, and detection of light. Photonics has long been a specialty of the university. RIT led the team that developed the first quantum photonic wafer, which is key to the future of mass-produced quantum communication systems.

Two professors in RIT’s computer science department organized the Northeast North America regional round of the International Collegiate Programming Contest, in which RIT placed 7th.

Over the next three years, the Research Experience for Undergraduates Site in Computational Sensing for Human-centered AI will welcome nine undergraduate students each summer to RIT’s campus. The site is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

RIT alumnus Elan Lee ’98 (computer science), creator of the game Exploding Kittens, was featured in two episodes of NPR’s Planet Money podcast about making an economics board game.

Every year, Thomas Kinsman, a senior lecturer in RIT’s department of computer science, dedicates months of his time building demos for an “Interactive Computing Zoo” to engage and educate visitors to Imagine RIT. 

Hridiza Roy combined computer graphics with imaging science and anchored it in computer science, resulting in a winning skill set that landed Roy an internship at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

If festivalgoers have trouble exploring the more than 430 exhibits at this year’s Imagine RIT, they can now enlist the help of AI by using the Imagine RIT Bot—a generative AI chatbot that’s like ChatGPT with a focus on answering questions about the Imagine RIT: Creativity and Innovation Festival.

RIT has a long history and culture of academic and extracurricular work in open source. Adrian Edwards hopes to pass his passion on to other students when he graduates in May and starts a job at Red Hat.

Julian Heuser, a fifth-year computer science major, is taking his game Year Unknown to the Game Developer’s Conference in March. His game is in the running for Best Student Game at the Independent Games Festival, which is held during the conference.

Since its inception in 2010, FreezeFest has brought students and the RIT community together for an assortment of winter-themed programs and events. Most of the events are not dependent upon snow and, unless mentioned, are free and open to all RIT students.
